50 years of the Jung Prize for Medicine

50 YEARS

OF EXCELLENCE IN HUMAN MEDICINE

Dear Ladies and Gentleman,

2026 is a special year for the Jung Foundation for Science and Research: the Jung Prize for Medicine is being awarded for the 50th time. Since 1976, the Foundation has honoured researchers whose work is transforming human medicine, opening up new paths in diagnostics and therapy, and making an impact far beyond the moment of recognition.

We are marking this anniversary by looking back on five decades of outstanding research. Above all, however, we are looking ahead: to scientific discoveries that deepen our understanding of disease, improve treatments and create new prospects for patients.

One of the highlights of our anniversary year is a Senate reception hosted by Hamburg’s First Mayor – a special tribute to our laureates and to our commitment to advancing medical research.

In this newsletter, we are therefore especially pleased to invite you to the 6th Jung Symposium “Excellence in Human Medicine 2026”. We also offer insights into our funding programmes for early-career researchers: we introduce the Deutschlandstipendium scholarship holders supported by the Foundation and invite young researchers to apply for the Jung Career Advancement Award for Medical Research.

6th JUNG SYMPOSIUM

6th Jung-Symposium Excellence in Human Medicine 2026”
How can artificial intelligence support surgical decision-making in cancer care? Which molecular mechanisms can help us better understand and diagnose rare diseases? And what does it mean for treatment when the nervous system “learns” pain?

These questions will be at the heart of the 6th Jung Symposium “Excellence in Human Medicine 2026”, to which we warmly invite you. In the anniversary year of the Jung Prize for Medicine, the symposium reflects what the Foundation has stood for over the past five decades: research that generates new insights, advances medical progress and broadens our understanding of patients’ needs.

Join us on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, in the Ian K. Karan Lecture Hall, Campus Lehre, Building N55, University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, or follow the event via the global livestream from 16:00.

YOUNG TALENT PROMOTION

Jung Career Advancement Award 2027
CAREER ADVANCEMENT AWARD

Applications are open until 31 August 2026 for the Jung Career Advancement Award 2027 for young medical specialists. We warmly invite early-career physicians to apply.

The award is aimed in particular at young physicians who, preferably after two years of research abroad, wish to return to or take up a position at a German hospital, where they can pursue in-depth scientific work alongside their clinical specialist training.

With funding of €210,000 over three years, the Jung Career Advancement Award enables recipients to carry out their own research project. In this way, we create the freedom needed for outstanding medical research.

DEUTSCHLANDSTIPENDIEN 2026

In 2026, we are once again supporting the next generation of medical professionals through the Deutschlandstipendium programme at the University of Hamburg

This year, the Foundation continues its support for Konstantin Matsui, Leonie Maria Brink and Anna Bögemann. Konstantin Matsui first received funding in 2024; Leonie Maria Brink and Anna Bögemann joined the Jung family last year.

With the Deutschlandstipendien, we are adding an important component to our support for early-career talent. They help create space for focused study and support young talent early on their path into medicine and research.
