AWARD-WINNING HUMAN MEDICINE |
|
|
Dear Sir or Madam
Over the many years in which we have been awarding prizes to outstanding scientists, we have built up a network. A network consisting of former award winners, supporters of the Jung Foundation and young researchers for whom we pave the way with grants. We like to refer to this network as our "Jung family" – in which we are proud of our members' successes and support them as best we can. We enjoy our annual award ceremonies in a personal atmosphere, which give the Jung family members the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas and, of course, to welcome new members. Because our family is constantly growing. In this newsletter, we would therefore like to focus on the Jung family: We introduce you to our new additions to the family in the form of our Fellows from 2023, whom we were able to meet in person at our network meeting for young researchers (see picture above), which was also attended by this year's Deutschlandstipendiaten and the Fellows from 2022, as well as report on the great successes of some of our long-standing members. |
|
THE JUNG FAMILY WELCOMES NEW ADDITIONS IN PERSON With our Jung Fellowship, which we have been granting for the second time, we are supporting five young doctors with 1,250 euros per month for one year so that they can conduct full-time research. In addition to financial support, our program also means, above all, inclusion in the circle of our Jung family and thus, among other things, contact with outstanding scientists in the field of human medicine. This year, we are delighted to welcome Kai Winterberg, Isabel Graf, Anton Offermanns and Esther Mehmel (from left) as well as Sandro Jäckle (not pictured). It was also particularly important for us to get to know each other personally, which we were able to combine with a dinner together at our network event for young scientists. |

RALF BARTENSCHLAGER RECEIVES DZIF PRIZE 2023 We always emphasize that our Jung Prize winners consistently receive other important awards in the course of their careers. It therefore comes as no surprise to us, and confirms our choice, that we are able to congratulate Professor Dr Dr h. c. Ralf Bartenschlager from Heidelberg University Hospital on winning this year's DZIF Prize for Translational Infection Research. The prize is endowed with 5,000 euros. As recently as 2022, we awarded Prof. Bartenschlager the Jung Prize for Medicine – for his creation of the basis for curing damage incurred by chronic infections with the hepatitis C virus, such as liver cirrhosis and liver cancer |

STEFANIE DIMMELER AMONG THE THREE BEST FEMALE RESEARCHERS IN GERMANY With our Jung Prize for Medicine, we honor scientists who have made a significant contribution to the advancement of human medicine and are expected to continue to do so in the future. We are therefore all the more pleased when this trust proves to be justified. In 2007, we had the honor of honoring Professor Dr Stefanie Dimmeler – today she is on the list of Germany's best female researchers. With over 700 publications in her field and more than 100,000 citations, the science portal Research.com has ranked her in third place. We congratulate her on this success! |

|
RUTH LEY IS ONE OF THE MOST CITED RESEARCHERS IN THE WORLD Professor Dr Ruth Ley, PhD has been a member of our Jung family since 2018. First as a laureate of our Jung Prize for Medicine and then as a member of the Board of Trustees. Since this year, she has even been Deputy Chairwoman of our Scientific Advisory Board. We are therefore proud that Clarivate, an analysis specialist in the fields of bibliometrics and scientometrics, counts her among the most influential researchers in her field. The company is known for calculating the impact factor of scientific publications. In 2022, less than 0.1 percent of the world's researchers in the various scientific disciplines received this award. A great achievement on which we congratulate her! |

JOSEF PENNINGER BECOMES HEAD OF THE HZI IN BRAUNSCHWEIG Professor Dr med. Josef Penninger has already been able to announce many exciting milestones in his career. In December 2018, we reported that he took over the management of the renowned Life Science Institute (LSI) in Vancouver. Now he is back in Europe and has been Scientific Director of the interdisciplinary Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig since July of this year. We would like to congratulate him and wish our Jung Prize laureate from 2007 all the best in his new position! |

NEW STUDY ON OBESITY WITH THE PARTICIPATION OF JENS BRÜNING Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research in Cologne, including our Scientific Advisory Board member and 2009 Jung Prize winner Professor Dr Jens Brüning, have shown in a recent study that reduced insulin sensitivity of cells in overweight individuals reduces the ability for associative learning. In order to reverse these changes, they achieved good results with the administration of the weight loss drug liraglutide. This is often used to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes. Even a single dose meant that the researchers could no longer perceive any difference in brain activity between the test subjects with normal weight and obesity. A great result! |

SEBASTIAN ZUNDLER TAKES OVER W3 PROFESSORSHIP AT THE FAU ERLANGEN-NUREMBERG We are always grateful when we can stay in touch even after a grant or stipend has ended. All the more so when we hear personally from a Jung Career Advancement Award winner that our support has given their career a "decisive boost". We would therefore like to take this opportunity to congratulate Professor Dr Dr med. Sebastian Zundler on his W3 professorship at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg. It was only in 2019 that we awarded him the Jung Career Advancement Award worth 210,000 euros, which he used to finance his own research project over a period of three years. We are proud that our trust and our award have helped to secure such a talented young scientist for science. |

RANDOLPH HELFRICH PUBLISHES NEW ARTICLE How neurological diseases are associated with our brain activity during sleep and which diagnostic and therapeutic methods can be derived from this – these are the research topics of Dr Dr med. Randolph Helfrich. And we bestowed on him the 2021 Jung Career Advancement Award for his ambitious research approach. Now, together with seven other researchers in this field, he has published a new article that has been included in "Science Advances". We are delighted that we were able to help make this article possible with our funding and would like to congratulate him on his new findings and this fantastic publication! |
