AWARD-WINNING HUMAN MEDICINE
|
|
|
Dear Sir or Madam
After we were able to present our award winners with their awards in person for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic this year, we now have further interesting news in our autumn newsletter. We present to you the results of our survey as well as our new Jung fellows, tell you about our networking event for young scientists and offer you an insight into our Board of Trustees as well as a successful practical example of our philosophy. |

ERNST JUNG PRIZE: MILESTONE IN THE RESEARCH CAREER
Being awarded with the Ernst Jung Prize for Medicine means much more than the prize money and the certificate alone can express – it is an important milestone in the research career of the laureates. This is evidenced by the extremely positive responses of the recipients of the Ernst Jung Prize for Medicine to a brief recent survey that was conducted by the Jung Foundation. 19 of the 33 laureates who participated in the survey see a direct or indirect connection between their Jung Foundation award and other, subsequently awarded prizes.

FREE USE OF PRIZE MONEY IS IMPORTANT TO PRIZE WINNERS
A special feature of the Ernst Jung Prize for Medicine is that the prize money is awarded without conditions – the prize winners can use their prize money as they see fit. This flexibility was explicitly emphasized by the participants of the survey. We have received feedback from many scientists that this has enabled them to advance science independently – a point that is very close to our hearts and is rooted in the DNA of our foundation.

FIRST NETWORKING EVENT FOR YOUNG TALENTS
At the end of September, the networking meeting for our young scientists took place in our foundation building in Elbchaussee. Our Fellows as well as our Deutschlandstipendiat:innen (in the front: Kyra Offen) met with the organizer of the Fellowship Program Blanche Schwappach-Pignataro (on the right) and Managing Director Verena Strasoldo (on the left) for a joint dinner. Afterwards, the young members of the Jung Family were able to exchange ideas and establish as well as intensify relationships. We are happy about this successful kick-off for the future annual network meetings. |

STRONG WOMEN ON THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Combined scientific and economic know-how: Since June, Professor Dr Blanche Schwappach-Pignataro (on the right), Dean of the Medical Faculty Hamburg, has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board and Board of Trustees of the Hamburg Jung Foundation for Science and Research. This means that the respected molecular biologist is now the second woman on the foundation's Board of Trustees, alongside Petra Scharner-Wolff (second from the left), Chief Financial Officer of the Hamburg Otto Group.
"We value the high level of professional and human competence that our high-performing female colleagues bring with them from their respective careers enormously," says Chairman of the Board of Trustees Jochen Spethmann (second from the right). "They greatly enrich our foundation work and culture."

"FROM RESEARCH TO THE BEDSIDE" IN PRACTICE
We have made it our goal to be close to the reality of patients' lives. How our motto "From research to the bedside" can succeed is shown by a recent article in Bild der Wissenschaft, in which Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h. c. Matthias H. Tschöp is focused on. Last year he was honored by us for his research in the field of obesity and diabetes. Today, the drug he developed, tirzepatide, which can help people with obesity lose weight, is about to be approved. In North America, it has even already been approved for diabetes. An impressive research result in the fight against two of the world's biggest widespread diseases and a great example of what our philosophy can look like in practice.
