IMPRESSIONS OF THE AWARD CEREMONY AND THE SYMPOSIUM 2022
Dear Sir or Madam,
This year our laureates could enjoy two exciting events: During the Jung Night, we were able to award our prizes to four renowned scientists. While the award ceremony took place in the closer circle of the Jung family, the Jung Foundation opened its doors virtually the following day and hosted the second Jung Symposium. As in the previous year, the award-winning scientists presented their research work to interested audience members across the world via livestream and so provided insights into excellent research.

AN EVENING OF CONNECTIONS:
THE JUNG NIGHT 2022

An evening of reunion and getting to know each other: After a two year break, the Jung Foundation was finally able to present four scientists with awards again. Chairman of the board Jochen Spethmann welcomed the guests: "Finally we can meet face to face again! Our first digital impact last year was also a great premiere, but nothing replaces meeting in person!"

SCIENCE LIVE AND IN COLOR: THE JUNG SYMPOSIUM 2022

On May 13, during the Jung Symposium, for the second time research results reached beyond the borders of Hamburg and into the world. The laureates presented their research work in lectures and answered the questions of the numerous participants. With the intention of bridging the gap between research and the hospital bed, this year's Jung Symposium once again offered an informative platform for scientists and anyone interested in medicine and science.

DR GIANNOU RECEIVES THE ERNST JUNG CAREER ADVANCEMENT AWARD
We warmly congratulate Dr Anastasios Giannou, postdoc at the UKE in Hamburg, on receiving the Ernst Jung Career Advancement Award. The promising approaches of the young physician to prevent the formation of metastases in cancer represent an important step in the treatment and control of cancer. "I can only say that we could not have found a better person to award the Ernst Jung Career Advancement Award to," said a delighted member of the Board of Trustees, Prof. Stefanie Dimmeler, adding, "I am quite sure that you will continue on your path."
You can check out his informative talk on "Avoiding Metastasis in Cancer" here. More information about Dr Giannou and his research can be found here. The laudation of Prof. Dimmeler can be found here

PROF. FISCHER COLLECTS THE ERNST JUNG GOLD MEDAL FOR MEDICINE
This year we are awarding the Ernst Jung Gold Medal for Medicine to Professor Dr med. Alain Fischer, of the Imagine Institute in Paris. Introducing Alain Fischer of the Paris Institute. "Alain Fischer is a world leader in the field of congenital defects of the immune system," said Prof. Thomas Böhm, Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees, in his laudation, acknowledging Prof. Fischer's achievements and praising, "His groundbreaking discoveries have advanced our understanding of fundamental mechanisms in immunology and served as the basis for the development of innovative therapies to save the lives of patients suffering from fatal immunodeficiency."
You can find the vivid lecture on "Understanding and Treating Congenital Immunodeficiencies" here. Further information on Prof. Fischer and his research can be found here. The laudation of Prof. Boehm can be found here

PROF. FLEMING EARNS THE ERNST JUNG PRIZE FOR MEDICINE
We are pleased to award Professor Dr Ingrid Fleming, biochemist and pharmacologist at Goethe University in Frankfurt, one of this year's two Ernst Jung Prizes for Medicine. Prof. Fleming will receive the award in recognition of her research on the relationship between diabetes and resulting vascular diseases, and for translating her findings into potential medical applications. "Ingrid Fleming has shown in an exemplary manner that sound basic science can yield very beautiful clinical applications," praised Prof. Christian Büchel, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, in his laudatory speech.
You can watch her exciting lecture on "Fitness for vessels: preventing secondary diseases of diabetes and other vascular diseases" here. For more information on Prof. Fleming and her research, click here. The laudation of Prof. Büchel can be found here.

PROF. BARTENSCHLAGER IS AWARDED THE ERNST JUNG PRIZE FOR MEDICINE
The Jung Foundation has presented Professor Dr rer. nat. Dr med. h. c. Ralf Bartenschlager of Heidelberg University Hospital with one of this year's two Ernst Jung Prizes for Medicine. “His pioneering work not only built the foundation for today's possible cure of chronic hepatitis C infections but also opened new and exciting paradigms of research that capture the imagination of scientists, and inspire young researchers”, praised Prof. Dominique Soldati-Favre, member of the Board of Trustees.

NEWS FROM THE FOUNDATION
CHANGE IN THE EXECUTIVE BOARD AND THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Prof. Hans-Ulrich Moritz © Eric Anders

"Our statutes require us to renew ourselves again and again. That is certainly good, but unfortunately also painful when familiar and valued people have to leave our circle." With these words, Jochen Spethmann bid farewell to long-time Board of Trustees and Executive Board member Prof. Hans-Ulrich Moritz. The chemist and business economist was responsible for the exchange between the Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees at the Foundation and was thus an important link that bridged the gap between science and business. We wish him all the best and thank him for his dedication and commitment.
Prof. Dr Blanche Schwappach-Pignataro © Eric Anders

Prof. Moritz will be succeeded by Prof. Dr Blanche Schwappach-Pignataro as a new member of the Executive Board and Board of Trustees. Like her predecessor, Prof. Schwappach-Pignataro will promote and coordinate the exchange between the Executive Board and the Board of Trustees. "When I told the board about the opportunity to recruit her to join our foundation, Prof. Moritz spontaneously commented: 'If this works out, we can consider ourselves very lucky to have a scientist of this caliber in our ranks,' " Jochen Spethmann welcomed the renowned molecular biologist.
GROWTH IN THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Board of Trustees of the Jung Foundation has also undergone a renewal and welcomes two more renowned members to its ranks, Prof. Dr. Dominique Soldati-Favre and Prof. Dr. Ruth Ley. As of June of this year, the Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees will thus have equal representation.

Successful research in molecular biology is only a small part of Prof. Dominique Soldati-Favre's achievements. Her current research project on deciphering the molecular mechanisms that ensure gliding motility and host cell invasion by the obligate intracellular parasites Toxoplasma and Plasmodium provides important insights in molecular biology.
Prof. Dr Ruth Ley © Eric Anders

Prof. Dr Ruth Ley was already awarded the Ernst Jung Prize for Medicine in 2018 for her microbiome research. She is one of the pioneers in microbiome research. In particular, her successful research into the fact, which factors influence the human gut microbiome and thus have an impact on health, distinguishes the scientist.
THANK YOU AND SEE YOU AGAIN IN 2023

We would like to thank everyone involved and of course our guests and our audience. A special thanks also goes to Nord Event as well as the Carl Group team. We hope that all participants were able gain a lot of exciting information. It was a pleasure for us to award our winners and to honor their work.
