AWARD-WINNING HUMAN MEDICINE
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen
Our network is growing. Every year, we have the pleasure of welcoming new laureates and scholarship recipients into our Jung family. We also strive to maintain contact with all the members who have joined us over the years. We understand how vital exchange and mutual support are within the scientific community – that’s why we offer platforms for personal networking, such as our Jung Symposium, the Blankenese Conferences, and our Jung Alumni Meeting. We are thrilled to celebrate the successes of our Jung family. Read on to discover the exciting news we have to share with you in this newsletter.

JUNG ALUMNI MEETING 2024:
A GREAT SUCCESS

Our Jung Alumni Meeting this September once again provided a wonderful opportunity to nurture both new and long-standing connections. Many of the former and current "Deutschlandstipendien" scholarship recipients and Jung Fellows (see current in the group photo on the left) accepted our invitation, contributing to the warm and inspiring atmosphere.

We are especially pleased that this meeting has now become an established tradition and a regular part of our foundation's annual calendar. This exchange once again highlights the growth of the Jung Foundation's network and underscores the importance of connecting and supporting each other within the scientific community.

WARM WELCOME TO THE JUNG FELLOWS 2024
We are delighted to welcome five outstanding young scientists as the Jung Fellows 2024: Michail Mordvintsev, Lena Rüschpler, Maximilian Effenberg, Paul Aron Brunnbauer and Lotta Jacken (left to right).

With this fellowship, we support young medical professionals who, through innovative projects and interdisciplinary approaches, have the potential to shape the fmedicine of tomorrow. The new Fellows benefit not only from financial support but also from access to a broad network of experts and former awardees.

We look forward to following their scientific progress and wish them great success on their journey!
NEWS FROM THE FOUNDATION
Measures Addressing the History of Ernst Jung
NEW PROJECTS: HELPING AND TAKING RESPONSIBILITY
In June 2024, the four-year research project "Medicine in the Neuengamme Concentration Camp and Its Aftermath" was launched, which we are supporting with €477,000. At the same time, since last year, we have also been sponsoring Médecins Sans Frontières with €300,000 for their clinical study "endTB-Q," which aims to improve the treatment of people in need suffering from drug-resistant tuberculosis. We expect the first interim results in the coming weeks.

Both projects are part of a comprehensive initiative through which we confront the history of our founder Ernst Jung, take lasting responsibility, contribute to the continued examination of the Nazi era, provide education, and help those in need.

BLANKENESE CONFERENCES 2024 – SCIENCE IN DIALOGUE
At the end of June, the Blankenese Conferences took place, with the Jung Foundation serving as the main sponsor. The conference provides a platform for scientific exchange and brings together leading experts from various disciplines.

Prof. Blanche Schwappach-Pignataro, Dean of the Medical Faculty at the University of Hamburg and a member of both the Board and the Board of Trustees of the Jung Foundation, opened the event with a warm welcome. Additionally, Jung Prize winners from 2006 and 2001, Prof. Reinhard Jahn (pictured left) and Prof. Thomas Jentsch (pictured right), presented their latest research. Jahn spoke about the exocytosis of synaptic vesicles, while Jentsch highlighted surprising insights into the control of vesicle size through the ASOR channel.

BOARD MEMBERS HONORED WITH ERC ADVANCED GRANT

This year, three members of our Board of Trustees have been awarded the prestigious ERC Advanced Grant. In addition to our Deputy Chair Prof. Dr Ruth Ley, both Prof. Dr Jens Brüning (pictured right) and Prof. Dr Gary R. Lewin (pictured left) have received this esteemed funding for their exciting research projects.

The ERC Advanced Grant supports outstanding scientists who make significant advancements in their fields through innovative research approaches. We are proud to have such remarkable individuals on our Board of Trustees, whose work not only advances scientific understanding but also paves the way for future innovations. Congratulations!

Emmanuelle Charpentier
RESEARCH BY EMMANUELLE CHARPENTIER LEADS TO BREAKTHROUGH IN MEDICINE

Prof. Emmanuelle Charpentier, co-inventor of the revolutionary CRISPR-Cas method, has set a milestone in genetic research with her discovery. Thanks to this groundbreaking technology, the first therapy for sickle cell anemia – a disease long considered incurable – has now been approved. The new treatment marks a major advance in personalized medicine and brings new hope to many affected individuals. Charpentier is a 2015 Jung Prize laureate.

NEW PUBLICATIONS FROM JUNG CAREER ADVANCEMENT AWARD LAUREATES
Two of our Jung Career Development Awardees have recently shared exciting scientific achievements with us.

Dr Maximilian Friedrich, this year’s awardee, has published three significant papers that have garnered international attention. His research on the Alice in Wonderland Syndrome and the development of AI-based biomarkers for measuring neurological disorders such as tremor and dystonia has been featured in the renowned journals Annals of Neurology and npj Digital Medicine.

Another success comes from Dr Anastasios Giannou, the 2022 awardee, whose team published their work in the Journal of Hepatology. Their research reveals how the cytokine IL-10 suppresses the immune system and promotes liver metastasis in colorectal cancer, offering new perspectives for cancer therapy.

We warmly congratulate them on these groundbreaking publications!
